Backyard “Granny Pods” Provide One Senior Living Option

granny podsThe major focus of CCEC is to guide clients through the process of deciding what kind of living space is optimum, and then, if a move to a retirement community is the choice, visiting the ones that will work best for the client, usually because of cost and proximity to one or more adult children.

Another option, however, is moving in with adult children. This is a complicated choice for several reasons. The “Granny Pod” would be a subset of this choice, and it’s an interesting consideration.

  • Perfect for those who don’t have the space or inclination to welcome aging parents into their home, but want them close by or can’t afford a traditional nursing home

  • Pre-fabricated and designed to be installed in the backyard behind the main home
  • Uses the main home’s sewer, water, and power lines
  • Includes such safety features as hand railings, defibrillators, first aid supplies, lighted floorboards, and a soft floor
  • Cost typically runs between $85,000 – $125,000
  • Usually includes space for a bed, small living room, kitchenette, and bathroom
