“Dear Nadine,
What a lovely dinner and what a wonderful beginning to your tenure for the members of The Lodge – residents and staff! An ambitious beginning possibly because there are so many of us and one of you, but if your schedule permits and your body can absorb both the food and the mental demands of questions as well as the need for diplomacy at all times, it should be well worth doing.

From what I have observed from this particular journey of mine, the problem of residences such as this is the sense of “them” versus “us.” By wanting to meet everyone and putting a name with a face, you have made that sense of necessary confrontation no longer a given! Also, by sharing your thoughts of making The Lodge a more active community, we become invested in its commitment to success, not just onlookers. For me, tied to a wheelchair because of my trials and tribulations with arthritis yet still possessing my mind, this is exciting.

Dinner last night provided a taste of what is to come, just as our New Yorker meeting did. Thinking and discussing are a necessary part of life, and that is what we did. Thank you for the opportunity to explore various ideas as well as “to break bread” together, particularly on the day of such a controversial election!

If there is anything I can do to help your transition to The Lodge, please let me know. I would like to have you come down to my apartment sometime soon to see the project I am working on, using the obituaries of our residents, creating ‘A Celebration of Life’. “I didn’t know how to begin the task of facilitating my mother’s downsizing and moving back up north from Florida to be near me. I felt overwhelmed and stymied. I was fortunate to have spoken to an eldercare lawyer, who referred me to Nadine, who has empowered me to navigate this daunting process. I could set up the new apartment furnished with my mother’s things first, bring her to the new apartment, and then go back to Florida later myself, and deal with all the details. 2. This is the beginning of a whole new relationship I can have with my mom–which is really what the whole process is about!
